Scholarship a chance for women to take flight Continued from page 1 The scholarship is named after the first female aviator to fly solo across the Atlantic Ocean. She was also a founding member of Zonta. The flying scholarship trains the recipient to achieve solo flight status and includes flying and 12 hours of tuition worth $2750. Five applicants will be shortlisted to pay $75 for a pre-selection flight before a winner is announced in mid-May.
Marlborough Aero Club president Craig Anderson endorsed the idea of scholarships with many former scholarship recipients at the club going on to fly commercially for places like Sounds Air. He says the opportunity for more women to take up flying was a huge positive. “I think a lot of women lack the confidence at times to give it a go but here is a great opportunity for someone.” He says the vast majority of the
club’s 300 members were men but they were always keen for more. One such pilot is Nicky Youmans who took up flying last April, after being inspired by her daughter Hannah who is now working and training to be a pilot at Cathay Pacific. Nicky, who is a science teacher at Marlborough Girls’ College, says she gave herself five lessons to become comfortable with flying. “I was always a nervous flyer,” she says. “I couldn’t wait for this thing to be back on the ground.
“I wanted to learn more about how it worked and by about the third lesson a change came over me and now I just love it.” Nicky was hoping to gain her solo licence at some point this year. She says her daughter is her hero for working tirelessly to achieve her dream in a male dominated field. Applications will be accepted until February 28. Shell shocked owner finds missing pet turtle By Paula Hulburt An intrepid turtle with a taste for freedom is finally back home safely after disappearing for four weeks. Squid the Red Eared Turtle vanished from his garden home in Blenheim leaving his owner fearing the worst. But the adventurous reptile has returned to his pond, none the worse for his month long trek. Owner Peter Stringer says he believed his beloved Squid had died after nobody came forward to report any sightings. “I had pretty much given up hope of him ever being returned home. “I thought I’d lost my little mate.” Peter posted adverts online and contacted the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SPCA) in Renwick in case Squid had been handed in. The missing turtle had vanished once before and had been handed in to staff at the centre. But with no word as to Squid’s wherea-
bouts, Peter says he assumed Squid would never be seen again. “I did think he’d gone for good this time. I couldn’t believe it when I came home and he was just sitting on his rock, sunbathing, looking at me wondering why I was making so much fuss. “I have no idea where he’d been or how he managed to get home but I’m so pleased to have him back.” Peter says he has gone to great lengths to make Squid a “turtle paradise” and has no idea why he likes to go wandering. “He has a great pond, lots of water and rocks with places he can sunbathe and places he can retreat to when he’s not feeling so social. “Squid even has a girlfriend, a turtle that belongs to one of my mates. Sunshine Cup back where it belongs By Celeste Alexander Blenheim has won the country’s hotly contested sunshine capital title for 2015 with previous winner Whakatane narrowly losing out by 29 hours. The sunniest four locations in 2015 (January 1 to December 31) were Blenheim (2814 hours), Whakatane (2785 hours), Lake Tekapo (2737 hours) and Appleby (2731 hours). Whakatane mayor Tony Bonne travelled to Blenheim on Monday to meet with Marlborough mayor Alistair Sowman, and to hand over the sunshine cup. The irony of the meeting was that it was overcast outside, with the sun only peeking out from behind dark clouds towards the end of the meeting.
“I was going to be cheeky and take a photo of the cup with Blenheim’s grey sky behind it,” Tony laughed. The two mayors shared friendly banter, with Tony joking that Blenheim will only hold the cup for one year. “It’s only for one year so look after it.” Both chatted about how close the two rivals were in the annual sunshine race to which Tony pointed out the tin of ‘Whakatane sunshine’ sitting on Alistair’s desk. “I think you were feeling the pressure so you opened your last can of our sunshine, adding some last minute hours. We shouldn’t have sent the tins down. “Give us one more month and we would have had it,” he laughed.
inbrief No commercial fishing for Sounds? The Government is planning to exclude commercial fishing from the Marlborough Sounds by establishing a new recreational fishing park. The proposal has been announced in Picton yesterday. Aquaculture will not be affected, and commercial fishers will be compensated for the loss of their fishing ground. Commercial scalloping, crayfishing and paua-gathering will be allowed to continue.

Motorists ignore woman injured in freak accident By Paula Hulburt A Picton lady left badly bleeding after a freak accident was ignored by drivers as she desperately tried to get help. Sloane Coleman had been driving in torrential rain on the Elevation just before Picton when a stone flew through her car window, leaving her with a nasty wound. Bleeding and scared she was going to pass out, she left her car and tried to stop passing motorists. But it was ten minutes before someone finally stopped and an

ambulance was called. Sloane was on her own in the car with her dog Winston, when the accident happened. “The rain got really heavy so I went to put the window up. I saw a guy mowing and heard him hit something; next thing I know I was struck above my eye. “I hit the windscreen and saw blood when I pulled the car over. I thought I was going to black out or vomit and knew I couldn’t drive. “I was shaking and in shock and couldn’t find my mobile phone. There was a lot of ferry traffic on
the road and I know people saw me waving for help as I made eye contact with a couple but no one stopped. “About 10 cars went past but it wasn’t until a guy in a blue ute saw me that I got help. I was getting really worried as the pain was bad and there was so much blood that I thought my eyeball had actually come out. “I’m the first to help others if I can and I really don’t understand why nobody stopped. If people are scared to get out of their car someone should have at least called out and asked me if I

Her eye was still bleeding internally and she could only make out shapes. “At this point I have no guarantees that I will get my sight back to normal but I’m determined to be positive. The care I got from the ambulance staff and Wairau Emergency department was awesome and I’d like to thank them.”

Dear Ed, I do enjoy Jacob’s sports column and wish to comment on his latest concerning West Indies batsman Chris Gayle cheekily “chatting up” a female interviewer. Jacob was bang on - it’s a storm in a tea cup. What is more questionable is why did Gayle, Bravo, Simmons etc., not play for the West Indies in the recent test series and instead opted to chase dollars in the Big Bash league. I realise there may be internal politics within West Indies cricket but it puts into question their lack of principles, their monetary greed and lack of patriotism and pride in their country. Frankly it’s not just cricket. Googly
Dear Ed, Here’s hoping the powers that be embrace our sunshine hours victory. It still feels like Nelson gets that credit but Marlborough should try to embrace the title this year and try to change that perception. It’s effectively free advertsising and a free marketing strategy falling in their collective laps. Granted, the sun has come at a cost with soil
moisture levels and rain in dire need but everyone is struggling with that. Here’s hoping Renwick people (Renwickians) as I like to call them actually listen to the water restriction advice early this year. There doesn’t seem to be an easy fix for the water issues in the province. It might be the biggest issue facing the new mayor... Or have I spoken too soon?
Dear Ed, Picton has been an excellent place to take the kids over the holidays. Plenty of things to see and do and town seems really pro-active about opening itself up to the tourists during the holiday period. It comes as a welcome change from Blenheim which I think could do a lot better. People are here willing to spend their money. Take advantage of it. J Snow

By local veterinarian Charlotte Patterson-Green Three dollar tadpoles that can currently be purchased at the local pet shop may seem like a wonderful idea to keep a young child entertained during the holidays, in fact most adults enjoy witnessing the enchanting transformation of these lively, aquatic critters to our amphibious friend, the frog. However, frogs require a reasonable level of care and can live for up to 15 years! Here are some facts to take into account before purchasing tadpoles or frogs. 1. Frogs eat a range of insects; mealworms, flies, waxworms, locusts and crickets. These can be bred, captured or bought
from your pet store. 2. A plastic/glass tank with a mesh top is required to house your frog (approximately 90x40x40cm for two adult Bell frogs) 3 . The tank should contain a swimming area, a land area and a semi submerged rock or branch. Branches, plants, rocks and moss also provide climbing and hiding areas. The tank should be kept humid by regularly spraying with water. 4. Frogs should not be handled with bare hands as our skin is harmful to them. 5. To celebrate their anniversary Brian organised a surprise afternoon party with 50 friends and family. A vintage car picked them up while their son, Ross played the bagpipes as they left the driveway. “I was the only one who knew nothing about it,” Alison says. “But it was a wonderful surprise.” The couple also got well wishes from Prime Minister John Key, Queen Elizabeth II and the New Zealand Governor General Sir Jerry Mateparae amongst others.

EDUCATION Eight study scholarships up for grabs Vodafone is offering young kiwis an opportunity to develop a career in cutting-edge technology, with a $160,000 boost to its national scholarship programme. This year Vodafone will offer eight two-year scholarships up to the value of $20,000 each, to school leavers who will be able to study in either Christchurch or Auckland. The target course is a New Zealand Diploma in Engineering/Information Technology with partner organisations, the Christchurch Polytechnic Institute of Technology (CPIT) and The New Zealand School of Education (NZSE). Vodafone has an existing apprentice-
ship programme, and the scholarships will further boost the success of the programme. Up to eight scholarships will be offered to school leavers and the programme will be focussed on young people who would not typically pursue tertiary education or be able to afford the fees. Students will complete two years of study, financially supported by Vodafone. On top of this they will have opportunities to experience the work place, with access to Vodafone mentors, work experience placements and educational projects. At the end of the study period, some
students may be offered a role as an apprentice, where they will rotate across Vodafone’s various technology teams at the head office in Auckland or at the new Innovation Centre in Christchurch. To apply for a scholarship, students must be: • Eligible to enrol with the provider with a minimum of NCEA level 2 with Mathematics; Science and English; • A New Zealand Citizen; • A recent New Zealand school leaver; • Aged between 17 and 21 years old Applications are now open and scholarships will be awarded in February 2016.Enrolments will be received through the institutions directly.

Blenheim swimmers get medal haul Twelve Blenheim swimmers took part in the Epic Swims, which took place in Lake Taupo over the weekend, and brought home an impressive seven medals. The adults swam over distances ranging from 1km to 10km, whilst the children swam 100m. The medal haul included golds for Yasmin Gee and Jodie Lovell, a silver for Pete Colbert and bronze medals for Paul Sell, Dave Grono, Pete Colbert and Nicola Lovell. Four brave souls took part in the Epic 10km: Paul Sell was the first Blenheim swimmer home in 2 hours 29 minutes and seven seconds for eighth overall and third in the men’s 40-49 age range, followed by Jodie Lovell in 2.40.53 in 15th overall and first in the women’s 30-39 age range. Comfortable wins in T20 cricket
Wairau Cavaliers and Celtic recorded comfortable wins in the senior Twenty20 cricket competition. Despite both games being reduced to 16 overs after rain came down moments before the start of play, both teams were not threatened. The Cavaliers beat Grove Town by 39 runs to move to the top of the table while Celtic beat Wairau Valley by eight wickets.

Keeping it in the family, Yasmin’s daughter Bella Yuen and Jodie’s husband Grant tried their hand in open water events for the first time, having a go at the Mid Epic 1km, with Bella coming 66th and eighth in the girls 14-15 age range and Grant 200th and fourth in the men’s 30-39-year-old group. in the Mini Epic 100m, with Grant and Jodie’s daughters Jessica 17th and fourth in the girls 7-8 age range and Nicola 31st; third in the girls five and six, and Paul’s daughter Chloe finished 26th and seventh in the women’s 7-8 age group enjoying their weekends away. The weekend was rounded off on Sunday morning with the Masters 2.5 Classic, which saw Pete Colbert win his second medal of the weekend when he
came in 19th overall and second in his age category and Emma Sell coming in 67th overall and 11th in the women’s 35-44 category. While this will be the longest open water swim of the season, there are plenty of events coming up, with the Ocean Swim Series events being held in Wellington, Christchurch and Auckland in the next few months, as well as local swims in Nelson and the Hipkins Cup at Rarangi Beach/ Whites Bay.

She was crowned Queen of the Withers for the fourth consecutive year with another dominant performance. She finished third overall against all competitors and was nine minutes ahead of the second placed woman Annabelle
Latz. Craig’s time of 44 minutes and 53 seconds was just over two minutes slower than Hansby’s which shows just how quick she was over the gruelling 10km course.
Marlborough cyclist Georgia Catterick finished fourth at the women’s time trial at the elite national road cycling champs in Napier. She covered the 23.2km course in 36 minutes and 31 seconds, over two minutes behind the winner, Rushlee Buchanan from Te Awamutu.

around the track to those that came to watch. The truck display event took place between the Streetstock
Open Championships races. The six trucks ranging between 444 and 730 horsepower.
